The box said 400°F, so I cooked the flour taquitos at 400°F, and the ends went nearly black while the chicken inside was still lukewarm. The next week I cooked corn taquitos at the gentler temperature I had switched to, and they came out tough and leathery instead of crisp. Two boxes, two failures, one lesson: corn and flour tortillas are not the same thing.
Corn tortillas need real heat to turn crunchy. Flour tortillas brown and blister faster, so they need a little less heat and a little more time. Get that one detail right and frozen taquitos are one of the best things an air fryer makes, crisp all the way around without a drop of fry oil. They sit next to corn dogs and jalapeno poppers on any game day table.
Quick answer: Air fry frozen corn taquitos at 400°F for 7 to 9 minutes and frozen flour taquitos at 380°F for 8 to 10 minutes, seam side down in a single layer, flipped once, straight from frozen. They are done when the shells are crisp and golden and the filling reads 165°F.
Why make taquitos in the air fryer?
- Crunchy shells all the way around, which the oven rarely manages
- Done in under 10 minutes from frozen, no preheating a big oven
- Better than the microwave, which turns the tortilla chewy and soft
- Easy to cook just a few for a snack or a whole box for a party
Corn vs flour taquitos: why the settings differ
Check the box before you set the dial:
| Shell | Setting | Why | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corn tortilla | 400°F, 7 to 9 min | Needs high heat to go from leathery to crunchy | Cracks if bent while frozen |
| Flour tortilla | 380°F, 8 to 10 min | Browns and blisters faster; needs time to heat the center | Dark ends before a hot middle |
| Homemade (fresh) | 400°F, 8 to 10 min | Filling is already cooked; the shell just crisps | Unrolling; use a toothpick |
Frozen taquitos straight from the box are brittle. Do not try to straighten or bend them, and do not thaw them, or the shells split as they heat. Converting the box's oven directions to basket numbers is what the air fryer calculator does.

- An instant-read thermometer
How to cook taquitos in the air fryer
- Check the shell. Corn or flour? Set the air fryer to 400°F for corn or 380°F for flour and preheat 3 minutes.
- Arrange seam side down. Lay the frozen taquitos in a single layer with a little space between them, seam down so they do not unroll.

- Spray lightly. A quick mist of oil makes the shells more golden. It is optional for most brands, which are pre-fried.
- Air fry and flip. Corn: 7 to 9 minutes. Flour: 8 to 10 minutes. Flip once halfway with tongs.

- Check the center. The shells should be crisp and golden and the filling 165°F. If the shell is done but the middle is not, drop 20 degrees and add 2 minutes.
- Rest 2 minutes. The filling is very hot. Serve with salsa, guacamole and sour cream.
Homemade taquitos: mix the chicken, cheese, salsa, cream cheese and spices. Warm the corn tortillas for 20 seconds in the microwave wrapped in a damp paper towel so they bend without cracking. Roll 2 tablespoons of filling tightly in each, secure with a toothpick, spray with oil, and air fry at 400°F for 8 to 10 minutes, turning once.
All air fryers cook differently. Machines drift about 10 degrees either way, so let the first batch calibrate the second, and trust the thermometer or the color cue over the clock. Every setting this site has tested lives on the baking chart.

Variations
- Beef and bean: swap the chicken for seasoned ground beef and refried beans.
- Buffalo chicken: toss the chicken in buffalo sauce and serve with ranch.
- Cheese and jalapeno: Monterey Jack and chopped pickled jalapenos, no meat.
- Loaded platter: top cooked taquitos with queso, pico de gallo and cotija.
Tips you shouldn't skip
- Corn gets 400°F, flour gets 380°F.
- Cook from frozen. Thawed taquitos go limp and split.
- Seam side down, always.
- Leave space between them so air reaches every side.
- Warm homemade corn tortillas before rolling or they crack.
- Feeding a crowd? The recipe scaler sizes the homemade filling.
Storage & reheating
- Fridge: cooked taquitos keep 3 days airtight.
- Reheat: 370°F for 3 to 4 minutes brings back the crunch.
- Freeze homemade: freeze rolled, uncooked taquitos on a tray, then bag them. Cook from frozen at 400°F for 10 to 12 minutes.
What to serve with taquitos
Salsa, guacamole, sour cream and queso are the classics. For a bigger snack spread, add breaded mozzarella bites, frozen wings and tater tots. For dinner, serve them with rice, black beans and corn on the cob.
Frequently asked questions
QHow long do frozen taquitos take in the air fryer?
Frozen corn taquitos take 7 to 9 minutes at 400°F, and frozen flour taquitos take 8 to 10 minutes at 380°F. Cook them seam side down in a single layer and flip once halfway. They are done when the shells are crisp and golden and the filling reaches 165°F.
QWhat temperature do you cook taquitos in the air fryer?
Use 400°F for corn tortilla taquitos, which need high heat to turn crunchy, and 380°F for flour tortilla taquitos, which brown faster and need a bit more time for the center to heat through. Homemade taquitos with cooked filling do best at 400°F.
QDo you need to thaw taquitos before air frying?
No. Cook them straight from frozen. Thawed taquitos get soft, stick together and often split open as they heat. Frozen ones hold their shape and crisp evenly. Just do not try to bend or straighten them while frozen, because the shells crack.
QWhy are my taquitos cracking in the air fryer?
Frozen corn tortillas are brittle, so bending them, stacking them or cooking them from a partly thawed state makes them split. Lay them flat, seam side down, with space around each one. For homemade taquitos, warm the corn tortillas first so they are pliable enough to roll without cracking.
QShould I spray taquitos with oil in the air fryer?
It is optional for most frozen brands, which are pre-fried. A light spray gives a more even golden color and a little extra crunch. Homemade taquitos made with plain tortillas do need a spray of oil, or the shells stay dry and pale.
QHow do you keep homemade taquitos from unrolling?
Roll them tightly, place them seam side down, and secure each one with a toothpick through the seam. Warming the tortillas first also helps them stay rolled. Remove the toothpicks before serving.
