How the maths works. An air fryer runs near full power the whole time. An oven pulls full power to preheat, then the thermostat cycles it on and off, so it draws roughly 40 percent of its rating once it is up to temperature. The saving comes mostly from the preheat you skip and the empty space you are not heating.
Default tariffs are national averages and date quickly. Enter the unit rate from your own bill for a figure you can rely on.
Where the money actually goes
People assume an air fryer is cheaper because it is smaller, and a 1500 watt appliance must beat a 2400 watt one. That is only half right, and it is the less important half.
An air fryer draws close to its full rating almost the whole time it runs. An oven does not. An oven pulls full power to get up to temperature, then the thermostat cycles the element on and off to hold it, so once it is hot it is drawing roughly 40 percent of its rating on average. On wattage alone the gap is much narrower than the sticker suggests.
The real saving is time at full power. An oven spends 10 to 15 minutes at full draw before your food goes anywhere near it. An air fryer preheats in three. For a 15 minute bake that preheat is longer than the bake itself, which is why short bakes show the biggest saving and long ones show almost none.
The second factor is what you are heating. An oven brings 60 or more litres of air and a heavy steel cavity up to temperature so it can bake one small tray. An air fryer heats about five litres. That mass has to be paid for whether you fill the oven or not.
The maths
Energy in kilowatt hours is power multiplied by time. The tool applies a duty cycle to each appliance, because neither one draws its rated power continuously.
Rated watts x (bake + preheat) x 0.88. Air fryers cycle a little once up to temperature, but far less than an oven.
Full power through the preheat, then a duty cycle for the bake: 42% electric, 38% fan, 55% gas.
Multiplied by your own tariff. Gas is priced separately, at roughly a quarter of the electricity rate per kWh.
The default rates in the dropdown are national averages and they go stale, so put your own number in from your latest bill. Your tariff matters more to the answer than any assumption in the model.
The honest part
The tool will tell you this, and it is worth saying out loud because most articles on this topic will not. An air fryer does not win every time.

The pattern is simple. An air fryer wins on short bakes and single small batches. Getting the bake right first time also matters more than it sounds, since a second attempt doubles the cost of everything on this page, and our air fryer temperature and time calculator is the fastest way to avoid one. An oven wins the moment you can fill it, because the preheat is a fixed cost you pay once and then amortise across everything on the shelves. Three trays of cookies in one oven load beats three sequential air fryer batches on both cost and time.

Gas and electric
Gas ovens use more energy than electric ones, not less. They vent hot combustion gases up a flue and they hold temperature less precisely, so the duty cycle is higher. On kilowatt hours consumed, gas loses.
On money it usually wins back most of the gap, because gas is typically priced at around a quarter of electricity per kilowatt hour. The tool applies that ratio by default, but gas and electricity tariffs move independently, so if the number matters to you, take both rates off your own bill and enter them.
One thing the calculator cannot price: the kitchen. Running a full-size oven for an hour in August heats the room you are standing in, and if you then run air conditioning against it you are paying twice. This is the reason a lot of people move summer baking to the air fryer, and it does not show up in any kWh figure.
Getting the numbers right
On the rating plate underneath the machine, not the box. Air fryers range from 800 to 1800 watts and the difference is significant.
Time it once. Most ovens take longer than people think, and most air fryers reach temperature faster than the manual claims.
From the bill, including standing charges if you want a true figure. Defaults here are averages and they date quickly.
Shorter bakes are where the saving concentrates, so the other lever is simply not overbaking. Questions
For short bakes, yes, usually by 50 to 70 percent. For long bakes the gap narrows a lot, and if you can fill an oven with three trays at once the oven wins outright. The saving comes mainly from skipping a 10 to 15 minute preheat and from heating about five litres of space instead of sixty, not from the difference in wattage. A 1500 watt air fryer and a 2400 watt oven are closer than they look, because the oven only draws full power during the preheat.
A typical 1500 watt air fryer uses about 1.3 kWh an hour, allowing for the fact that it cycles slightly rather than drawing full power continuously. At an average US rate of about 17 cents per kWh that is roughly 22 cents an hour. Most bakes run 10 to 30 minutes, so a single bake usually costs between 4 and 12 cents. Around 5 to 10 cents in the United States for a 30 minute bake in a 1500 watt machine, against roughly 25 to 35 cents in an electric oven once you include the preheat. In the UK, at around 27p per kWh, that is roughly 2 to 4p versus 12 to 18p. The tool works it out for your own wattage, tariff and bake length, in your own currency.
It does not usually bake faster, and the cost is dominated by the preheat rather than the bake. An oven runs at full power for 10 to 15 minutes before the food goes in, and it has to bring a heavy steel cavity and 60 litres of air up to temperature to do it. For a 15 minute bake that preheat uses more energy than the bake itself. An air fryer preheats in about three minutes and heats a fraction of the space.
Often it is close. A gas oven uses more energy than an electric one, because it vents hot combustion gases and holds temperature less precisely, but gas is usually priced at around a quarter of electricity per kilowatt hour, which claws most of the difference back. No. A microwave is more energy efficient than an air fryer for pure heating, because it puts energy directly into the food rather than heating air around it, and it finishes much faster. The air fryer wins on texture, not on energy. If you only care about cost and you are reheating rather than baking, the microwave is cheaper every time.
Very little, because it is short. Three minutes at 1500 watts is about 0.075 kWh, roughly one cent in the US. That is why the tool includes it but it barely moves the total. The oven preheat is the expensive one, at 10 to 15 minutes of full 2400 watt draw, which works out four to eight times the energy of the air fryer preheat.
Usually the oven, once you are at two or more batches. The air fryer advantage is a short preheat, and you pay that once per batch plus the full bake each time. An oven pays its preheat once and then bakes everything together. The crossover normally arrives at the second or third batch, which the tool will show if you enter the combined time.
It is a good estimate, not a meter reading. The duty cycles it uses are typical values, 88 percent for an air fryer and 38 to 55 percent for ovens depending on type, and real appliances vary with age, insulation, how full they are and how often you open the door. The two inputs that matter most are your actual wattage, on the rating plate under the machine, and your actual unit rate from your bill. Get those right and the answer will be close.
More than the energy figure suggests. Running a full size oven for an hour heats the room, and if you have air conditioning running you pay a second time to remove that heat. An air fryer puts a fraction of the heat into the kitchen. This does not appear in any kilowatt hour calculation, including this one, but it is a real cost and it is the reason a lot of people shift summer baking to the air fryer.
