The first Halloween I made these, every spider drowned. I built the faces on cold cheese like the pretty photos suggested, and the moment the mozzarella melted, the olive bodies slid off center and sank, leaving eight pizzas that looked haunted for the wrong reasons. The fix is embarrassingly simple: melted cheese is a liquid, so the faces go on after it melts, not before. Two extra minutes in the basket sets the cheese around each piece and locks the design exactly where a six year old placed it.

These are the dinner course of my Halloween table, feeding the kids real food next to the mummy dogs and the mummy jalapeno poppers. The whole spooky spread lives on the Halloween treats page.

Quick answer: Build English muffin halves with 2 teaspoons of sauce and a light layer of mozzarella, bake at 360°F for 3 to 4 minutes until the cheese melts, then lay on the faces, mozzarella bandages, pepperoni jack-o'-lantern pieces, olive spiders, and bake 2 more minutes so they set into the cheese. Raw pizza dough needs a naked par-bake first.

Why make Halloween pizzas in the air fryer?

  • Each round bakes in 4 to 6 minutes, so a build-your-own line keeps producing all evening instead of waiting on one oven sheet
  • Every kid's creation bakes moments after they build it, which is most of the fun
  • The bare basket crisps the bottom better than a sheet pan, the same rule our frozen pizza guide is built on
  • The kids build at the table, the adult runs the basket, per our baking with kids guide

Pick your base, know its number

Every base below makes a Halloween pizza; they differ in speed and in whether they need a head start.

Bagel halvesNo360°F, 5-6 minThe hole makes a screaming mouth

The "prep first" column comes straight from our pizza dough testing: the fan is actively hostile to raw dough wearing wet toppings. Sauce a raw round and the top sets while the middle stays gummy. Par-bake raw doughs naked first and the floppy round becomes a rigid little raft. Pre-baked bases skip the step, which is why English muffins are the party default. Converting an oven mini pizza recipe you already love is an air fryer calculator job.

Ingredients for Halloween mini pizzas

  • 4 English muffins, split into 8 halves
  • ½ cup pizza sauce (about 2 teaspoons per half)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 2 sticks string cheese or 4 oz fresh mozzarella, cut into thin strips, for mummy bandages
  • 12 slices pepperoni, some whole, some cut into face shapes
  • ¼ cup black olives, sliced and halved, for eyes, spiders and mouths
  • Optional: green bell pepper bits for pumpkin stems

Sauce discipline: 2 teaspoons per muffin half, spread to the edges. Overdressed minis go soggy in any machine, and less sauce is the honest answer to most soggy-bottom complaints.

Tools you'll need

  • An air fryer (any brand)
  • A small sharp knife or kitchen shears for face shapes
  • Bowls for the topping line, one per topping
  • No parchment: minis bake directly on the bare basket for the crisp bottom, per the foil and parchment guide

How to make air fryer Halloween mini pizzas

  1. Prep the bases. Split the muffins and press each half lightly so it sits flat. If using raw pizza dough or flattened biscuits, par-bake them naked first: pizza dough at 400°F for 3 minutes plus a flip and 1 more, biscuits at 330°F for 3 minutes.
  2. Set the build line. Sauce, shredded mozzarella, and bowls of bandage strips, pepperoni shapes, olives and pepper bits. Cut every face piece now, while nothing is hot.
  3. Build faceless. Two teaspoons of sauce spread to the edges, then a light layer of shredded mozzarella. No faces yet; that is the entire trick.

  4. First bake. Bake 3 to 4 halves at a time directly on the bare basket at 360°F for 3 to 4 minutes, until the cheese is fully melted.

  5. The two minute face stop. Open the basket and lay on each pizza's design, mummy bandages with olive eyes, pepperoni jack-o'-lantern pieces, olive spiders, monster eyes. Close and bake 2 more minutes so the faces anchor into the setting cheese.

  6. Rest and repeat. Rest 2 to 3 minutes on a rack; melted cheese holds heat longer than it looks. The next tray runs a shade faster on a fully hot machine.

All air fryers cook differently. Machines drift about 10 degrees either way, so watch the first tray: cheese fully melted at 3 minutes means your machine runs hot, and the face stop comes early. Every tested setting lives on the baking chart.

The four faces

  • The mummy: strips of string cheese or fresh mozzarella laid across at crossing angles at the face stop, with two olive slice eyes peeking through a gap. The bandage logic is borrowed straight from the mummy dogs.
  • The jack-o'-lantern: triangle eyes, a triangle nose and a jagged mouth cut from pepperoni or olives, plus a tiny green pepper stem.
  • The spider: one olive half as the body, sliced slivers as eight legs. Fast enough to make a dozen.
  • The one-eyed monster: a mozzarella round with an olive pupil and a jagged pepperoni mouth. The design most often invented on the spot by six year olds, which is the point.

Candy eyes never bake, here or anywhere. If a design wants them, they go on after the rest, stuck with a dab of cream cheese, the same rule as every decorated bake on the Halloween page.

Tips you shouldn't skip

  • Faces after the melt, always. The two minute rule is the whole difference between spiders and shipwrecks.
  • Never top raw dough. Par-bake it naked first, or the middle stays gummy while the top sets.
  • Bake on the bare basket; parchment insulates away the crisp bottom.
  • Two teaspoons of sauce per half. The soggy-bottom complaint is almost always a sauce complaint.
  • Scaling for a classroom party is a recipe scaler job.

Storage & make-ahead

  • Do ahead: par-bake dough rounds (a day at room temperature, a month frozen), cut all the face pieces, shred the cheese, portion the sauce. Party time becomes assembly only.
  • Do not assemble sauced pizzas hours ahead; sauce sitting on any base slowly turns it soggy.
  • Leftovers: 3 days refrigerated. Re-crisp at 360°F for 2 to 3 minutes straight on the basket, the same revival trick as reheating any pizza. Never microwave a crisp bottom you were proud of.

Running the party line

This recipe is really a system: bowls down the middle of the table, a base on every plate, and finished builds fed to the basket three or four at a time. At 4 to 6 minutes a round nobody waits long enough to complain, and the adult's only jobs are the basket and the face stop. Round out the table with the mummy dogs, a bowl of roasted pumpkin seeds, and something sweet like the pumpkin hand pies for after.

Frequently asked questions

QHow long do mini pizzas take in the air fryer?

4 to 6 minutes at 360°F on a pre-baked base like an English muffin half, naan or a bagel, split as 3 to 4 minutes to melt the cheese, then 2 more after the faces go on. Raw dough bases need a naked par-bake first, about 3 minutes at 400°F for pizza dough or 330°F for flattened biscuits. Later trays run slightly faster on a fully hot machine.

QWhy do the decorations sink into my Halloween pizzas?

Because melted cheese is a liquid, and anything placed on it before the bake ends up swimming in it. The fix is the two minute rule: bake the pizza sauced and cheesed but faceless until the cheese fully melts, then lay the pepperoni shapes, olive eyes and bandages onto the molten surface and bake 2 more minutes. The cheese sets around the pieces and locks them where you placed them.

QCan you put raw pizza dough in the air fryer for mini pizzas?

Yes, but never topped from raw. The fan sets the surface before the inside bakes, so a sauced raw round comes out gummy in the middle. Par-bake naked rounds at 400°F for 3 minutes, flip, and give them 1 more, then sauce, cheese and finish at 360°F like any other mini. Par-baked rounds keep a day at room temperature or freeze for a month.

QWhat is the best base for Halloween mini pizzas?

English muffin halves for a party: already rigid, no par-bake, personal-sized, and the craggy surface grips sauce while the bottom crisps on the bare basket. Fresh pizza dough eats best but adds a par-bake; flattened biscuits bake puffy at 330°F; naan and pita give a bigger canvas; bagel halves are chewiest and their hole makes a ready-made screaming mouth. The real answer is whichever is already in the kitchen.

QCan you make Halloween mini pizzas ahead of time?

The right parts, yes. Par-bake dough rounds, cut the face pieces, shred the cheese and portion the sauce ahead, so party time is assembly only. Do not assemble sauced pizzas hours early; the sauce slowly soaks the base. Fully baked minis reheat well at 360°F for 2 to 3 minutes on the bare basket, so baking a platter an hour early and re-crisping in waves also works.

QDo you need parchment paper for mini pizzas in the air fryer?

No, and skipping it is an upgrade. A mini pizza baked directly on the bare basket gets a crisp bottom because hot air reaches it through the holes; parchment insulates the base and costs you exactly the texture the machine is best at. For very wet builds, a perforated parchment round loaded with the pizzas already on it works at a small cost in crispness, but the better answer is less sauce.

If you make these, I'd genuinely like to know which face your table invented: leave a rating below, or a comment with your model if your cheese melted faster or slower than 4 minutes. For the rest of the monster buffet, try the mummy dogs, mummy jalapeno poppers, or pumpkin hand pies. For real pizza nights the other 364 days, start with the pizza dough and the frozen pizza guide.
